All right family, the past couple of weeks have been pretty intense. We are going to STOP Story Town for the next 3 weeks. There will be no robust vocabulary, no spelling, and no reading tests. About the only thing that will stay the same is SS, morning work, journals, and specials. I will not be sending home Friday letters until we are back with Story town. Please know that all NO Name papers get thrown away. For some students that is more than others. Most of our class does put their name on their work, but no grade will be given for papers that are thrown away. I hope you have a relaxing weekend. The Valentine's Party will be Tuesday.

This will be our last week with Story Town until after ISAT. We do this to take three weeks to get ourselves comfortable for ISAT testing. Due to the fact that there will not be story town, there won't be formal Friday Letters either. We will be working our of ISAT prep books, working through skill pages and packets, but our normal routine will be different. It will give us a break from the tight structure we are stuck in day to day.
I will put the math voc. words on the BLOG this afternoon so that you are aware of what they will be tested over on their voc. math quizzes. Enjoy the evening. I will try to get through the SS test tonight to go home tomorrow.

We have completed our chapter in SS, and we started our review. The kids had about 15 min to do their SS questions 1-6 for lesson 3, but not many of them got very far. Collectively today they had 1 hour and 22 min. I am making them use the book, and that is very frustrating for them with SS. They seemed to be able to find what they were looking for better in Science, which is funny. They do have to infer more in the SS text though, so I guess that makes sense. They will have an opportunity to complete a word problem on the black board Tues-Friday of this week. The child that has the answer first and Big 5 written down gets to do odds or evens on their PS. All other children that get the correct answer throughout the day get a Hall pass. Kate and Olivia had the correct answer today, and Livy was the first. Congrats!

Wow.....this week is like a replica of last week...LONG :)
We have almost completed lesson 2 in SS, and there will be a worksheet over lesson 2 tomorrow night. Today I had the kids go back and do 4 of the review questions from lesson 1. I am insisting that they work more independently, and I am asking that you do the same at home. I keep telling them that they are completely capable to get the work done, and that I would never give them something that we haven't gone over. I am preparing them not only for fifth grade, but for the rest of their scholastic career. I told them that I expect them to be independent.....and it was rough for a few of them. I do want you to check over their work, and I thank you for that.

We had to leave our room for a couple hours today, so papers will go home Monday. Changing our routine, I completely forgot to file the graded papers after that. Progress reports go home Friday. There will be their last test Monday of the first half of the quarter. Please know that we had one case of a child throwing up and another child with diarrhea today. There is a stomach bug going around.

Today took it out of all of us. Our fourth grade class needed a nap by the afternoon. We all felt like today seemed like 2 days in one...uhg. The kids had 100 min. collectively to get their work completed, but not all took advantage of the time. Have a fantabulous evening!

I made a joke this morning that I thought was hilarious and had me laughing out loud. The kids gave me blank stares and I heard faint crickets. Our Hope "Hopers" was out, so I said, "Ohhhh....I'm Hopeless". Ha! get it? Hopeless-as in without Hope. That's still funny to me.

What a dreary day! If only we could escape our nightly routines to just curl up on the couch and watch T.V/read a book...... sigh, that would be nice. School has definitely turned into "January" mode. When you walk pass the rooms you can hear all the teachers saying the same common lines, and the kids are tired. Not enough outside play doesn't help the atmosphere. We are trying to keep it fun in our room, but behavior does have a lot to do with how much fun we can have. We have started a new policy: If work time is given and children are not on task, I will take back my time. Which means I will begin another instructional lesson in one of our subjects/or begin something that had to be pushed out of our day due to timing. It is very frustrating to see students sitting here doing nothing or the wrong thing when I am giving up my time for them to work. They should go home to study, and they should work here.

Well, we read my FAVORITE story today. the plot is a little confusing, so we created a character map. I want everyone to read/listen to the story again before they take the AR test. The kids seem to really have their vocabulary words down, and we will review the narrative forms again tomorrow. The DOG quizzes and spelling tests from last week were marvelous!!!!

Hey there family! The weeks seem to go so fast, but the weekends go even faster. The kids had an hour to get their math supple sheet and robust completed this morning. I was out Friday, but I did stop in before school to complete grades and have Friday Folders ready to be passed out. Progress reports are soon, can you believe that?

We had a lot to fit in today, but we got through it all. The class started our chapter review for SS, and we did it as a class. The new robust vocabulary was introduced and so was the new focus skill. We listened to our story, and then verbally filled in a story elements chart on the story. The spelling words and robust words should be in their agendas. In math it was review because we have worked with millimeters in science. They were given 45 min. this A.M. to get the robust completed and math started or vise versa, and about 15 min. this P.M. After lunch and reading workshop, I had to teach our normal Tuesday grammar lesson. Then we ended our day with giving out the Reading Minute rewards. It was the first time ever that we had a tie for first place. Both Kyle and Abbie read for 930 min.!! Way 2 Go!!

Ok family.....today we had a calm day gone crazy towards the end.. :)

Grades are coming home and most of the Friday Folders. I say most of the folders because we had to have the papers passed out this time instead of filed. I forgot to add the papers that I had filed to their folders. I guess that works out because their math grades did not print out on the sheet. It was an end of the day thing, and we had no time to correct the mistake. So....math grades and the remaining papers will come home tomorrow. I'll just print out a sheet with all four.

I left school yesterday to pick up 2 of my kids and Zoe was literally weeping from pain (4 yrs. old). So we went straight to the doctor's office for her to be diagnosed with strep (not spelled right) throat. I was not able to go to school today, which I was not planning on. The kids will be taking their spelling test, grading lesson 1 sheet in science, reading as much as they can of lesson 2, reading the Reader's Theater for the week, doing the next lesson in math, working in their group during reader workshop, and completing a holiday project we started Thursday. Next week we will not be doing story town, and I will send home a Friday "update" letter, grades, and Friday Folders on Monday. I'm so sorry for being out today.

This has been the most unpredictable, crazy scheduled week. We were able to begin our next chapter in science, review our math, review our vocabulary, and take our math test. All but two, I believe are coming home homework free. A large portion of the kids did not have their book reports done, which is really discouraging. I will start letting you know how much work time they have here during their day, so you can better judge what should really be coming home to be completed. Enjoy your Thursday night!!!

Today was a weird schedule day, but we made it through beautifully. The concert was outstanding, and very enjoyable. The rewards were given out for the minutes read in November today, and the class was again encouraged to keep track of the time that they are reading. They are required to read at least 30 min a night, which comes out to 900 minutes (give or take) a month. Please help us make this happen nightly. We appreciate all that you do.

Today was a crazy schedule day, but it turned out well. The kids had 20 min. when they got to class to do their morning work and get ready for our day. Then from 8:20-9:00 there was chorus, from 9:00-9:40 they had music, and lunch was from 11:00-11:45. So we did not have much instructional time but we fit in reading with vocabulary review and practicing predictions, and we were also able to work 40 minutes on grammar. The concert was wonderful, and the behavior of the LC kids was beautiful. They really made us proud! Have a great night, and we'll see you tomorrow.

Today looked like it went well. Tomorrow will be a catch up day. It looks like we will earn all of our marbles by Friday! That means that we will celebrate by watching a movie Friday morning. Hey there family! We truly do not have enough time in our days. Today the class began to review for the science test that is scheduled for Tuesday of next week. They will do the vocabulary at the end of the chapter tomorrow. In reading we were able to review the vocabulary with a new game, and the kids seemed to really enjoy it. Math was a lesson converting addition to multiplication. The class picked up the skill quickly. Due to time constraints they were assigned only evens and odds. We are still trying to tweak our schedule so that we are able to stay on time. Overall, it was a great day!

Sorry I'm late. I was hanging our AWESOME buddy leave rubbing projects. If you are at the school, they are hung (and randomly falling...lol) in the 1st grade wing. Please reread the story tonight, and study the vocab. We are going to try something new with the reading test. Our Mr. Z's assembly was today, and most of the class is coming home with the fundraiser info. I missed 2 pick ups, and we'll get that home to you tomorrow. The students have been encouraged to reread their story town play so that they are prepared not only for the test but for the AR test. Tomorrow should be a pretty fun and hectic morning. We will start the day off with our pancake experiments, Chex-mix, and Crystal light.

Is it really only Tuesday? We have introduced Reader Workshop into our routine, which makes all instruction have to be completed before lunch. The kids will have from 1:40-2:10 daily to get any remainder work they need completed finished. It will take a week or so for them to feel comfortable with the newer schedule. Time management will be a huge focus.
Please help me make sure your student is reading at least 30 min a night.

I was absent yesterday, but the class had a really great day. My son has a sinus infection, and Zoe has double ear infections. Allergy season.....blah! We read our 4th story today, and you will see the text book come home tomorrow for your student to read you the story. That can be your 30 min of reading, if not more, for that night. I keep forgetting to take home the phone number binder, but I put it right in my bag as soon as I got here today. i will be calling over the next couple days to see how everything is going.

It feels like Thursday, so I'm thinking this might be a long week.....LOL. The message of our assembly today was for everyone to try to do their best to help others. There is no thing to small that someone can do to make another person's day better. In turn if we all help someone else, we we benefit as well.
Please look over the robust sentences for accuracy and spelling mistakes. The kids are encouraged to use a dictionary while creating their sentences. I am so grateful for all of your support! enjoy your night.

Happy Monday! We should be getting into our routines by now, and the kids are getting accustomed to my expectations. One thing that does continue to be a problem is children speaking out. Your kids held up so well today with all of the information that we had to cover. We basically, due to scheduling, have to fit all of our instruction into the morning. They were with me every step of the way. They will need to bring home their Story Town Books either every Wednesday or every Thursday. As a family you guys will want to set up a schedule. That way they can read the story with someone at home as well.

Our first full day was great! We did not have any of our specials today, but the day still seemed to fly by. This morning we took a lengthy time making sure the class was aware of how to fill out their morning work notebooks and the importance of staying organized. We worked on our first math lesson, and then we went over various problems on the homework assignment so that they would know how to complete the problem sets correctly. If they do no have a highlighter at home, then they will need to transport one back and forth from school. A marker of light color will work as well. While they were working collaboratively on the remaining math work, they circulated through taking their STARS test. The score to that test is located in their home folder. This is the ranges of reading levels that they are most comfortable in. This afternoon we began our first chapter in science, and read some more of our class book, Frindle.

Ok, we made it through day one and our final day of presentations....yay! Grades for the presentation will be coming home in the Friday Folder. Please send your child with a small jacket if they are prone to get cold. We have no air, and it is hot here...to most of us. I will have all the windows open and the fans on high.
